Above left, the property is surrounded by a natural forest. The estate's gardener has started the process of clearing the overgrown wild raspberries to encourage the native cinnamon ferns (Osmunda cinnamomea) and trilliums (Trillium grandiflorum). I am also introducing native understory trees and shrubs, such as flowering dogwood, serviceberry, gooseberry and witch hazel (Corus florida, Amelanchier laevis, Ribes sp. and Hamamelis virginiana.)

The front lawn, above right, features a 20-year-old lilac underplanted with white, naturalized tulips.

The sketch above, shows a projected daybed pavillion in a forest clearing behind the house. It is shaded by serviceberries, hemlocks and sugar maples and surrounded by cinnamon ferns and thalictrums.
